Tulum in March: weather, seaweed and which weeks to book in 2027

March is the last mild month of the dry season: barely any rain, warm sea and the heat starting to climb. In 2027 the whole of Easter week also falls in March. Here's how it breaks down.

March in Tulum is dry and getting hotter: highs climb from 86 to 89 °F, only about one day in seven brings rain and the sea holds at 80 °F. In 2027 the month also has three dates that fill the town: Mexico's March 15 long weekend, the March 20 equinox and Easter week, March 21-28. We write this from downtown Tulum, where we rent our apartment, using Weather Spark's averages and the 2027 calendar.

In practice the first half feels like February and the second half previews April. From mid-month, do ruins and biking early and spend midday at a pool or cenote; cenote water is 24-26 °C (75-78 °F) year-round. Our picks: the best cenotes near Tulum.

Is there sargassum in Tulum in March?

March is the last month of the historical low-seaweed window on the Mexican Caribbean, November to March. Two honest caveats. In 2026, the worst year on record in Quintana Roo, the season started in January instead of April. And the University of South Florida Optical Oceanography Lab's bulletin dated September 30, 2026 only projects a decline until possibly November; nobody publishes a serious March forecast six months out. Check photos and reports from the week before you fly, using the method in our sargassum guide.
