Tulum in January: weather, seaweed and when to book in 2027

It's the coolest month of the year, rain is rare and the sea stays warm. It's also high season. Here's how January changes week by week and how to plan the trip without overpaying.

January is one of the nicest months to walk around Tulum: 28 °C highs, 17 °C early mornings and only one day in five with any rain. It's high season, so crowds and prices are up, especially in the first week. We write this from downtown Tulum, where we rent our apartment, using Weather Spark's climate averages and the dates already confirmed for 2027.

What is the weather like in Tulum in January?

January is Tulum's coolest month, and it still feels Caribbean. The typical high is 28 °C (82-83 °F) all month and the low sits around 17 °C (62 °F), which feels genuinely chilly on a rooftop at 6 a.m. The chance of a wet day stays near 20% from start to finish, with about 1.6 inches of rain over the month. The sea is around 27 °C (80 °F), warm enough to swim every day.

The big difference from summer is humidity. In July nearly every day is muggy; in January it's just over half. You can bike to the ruins mid-morning without arriving soaked.

Cold fronts (nortes): January's only caveat

From November to February the Yucatán gets cold fronts, locally called nortes. A norte brings one to three days of north wind, grey skies, highs of 22-24 °C (72-75 °F) and choppy sea. Boat trips get cancelled and reef snorkeling loses visibility. You don't need to cancel anything: keep ocean activities on flexible days. Cenotes don't care about the wind (the water is 24-26 °C year-round and there are no waves underground), so they're the natural plan B. Our picks near downtown are in the best cenotes near Tulum.

Is there sargassum in Tulum in January?

Historically, December and January are the cleanest months on the Mexican Caribbean: the low-seaweed window runs from November to March. The honest caveat is 2026, the worst sargassum year on record in Quintana Roo, when the season started in January instead of April. Nobody can seriously forecast January 2027 months ahead. The University of South Florida's optical oceanography lab publishes a monthly outlook, and its latest bulletin expected the total amount to keep dropping through November. Check recent beach reports a week before you arrive and don't prepay an expensive beach club blind. How to check is in our sargassum guide.

Crowds and the best weeks to book

January is high season, but it isn't uniform. The first week carries New Year occupancy. January 7-15 eases a little, except the Day Zero weekend. Things to do in Tulum in January

Ruins early, minus the summer heat

The Tulum archaeological site opens 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., last entry 3:30 p.m. Since the federal decree of July 20, 2026, foreigners pay 265 pesos in total (Jaguar Park plus the site) and Mexican nationals 80 pesos Monday to Saturday, free on Sundays. In January, arriving at 8:00 is about beating the lines rather than the heat. It's about 10 minutes by bike from downtown. Full details in our Tulum ruins guide.

Chichén Itzá and Valladolid in mild weather

Chichén Itzá has almost no shade and May is brutal. With 28 °C highs, January is the best time of year for the full day trip. Timing and transport are in Chichén Itzá from Tulum, and for a lunch stop on the way back, Valladolid from Tulum.

What you won't see in January

Sea turtle nesting in Tulum runs May to November, so there are no hatchling releases in January.

Getting to Tulum in January

Several US airline routes to Tulum airport (TQO) are winter-seasonal, running roughly November to April, so January has more direct options than most months. Still compare against Cancún, 1 h 45 min away by road. From Tulum airport to downtown is about 30 minutes; Uber and Didi don't operate normally in Tulum and taxi fares are agreed before you get in. Options and prices: Tulum airport to downtown.

What to pack for January

Where to stay in Tulum in January

The beach strip fills up first in January and handles a norte worst: if the sea turns grey you're far from everything and every outing is a negotiated taxi. Downtown you walk to breakfast, cenotes are 8-12 minutes by car and the ruins 10 minutes by bike.

Hacienda Tuk is a 2-bedroom apartment in downtown Tulum, inside the Tuk Tulum complex, with a pool, rooftop and full kitchen. In high season (December to March) the direct reference rate is from 120 USD per night (about 2,150 MXN), 10% below the lowest Airbnb price on October 8, 2026; the host confirms the exact rate for your dates. On the apartment page you pick dates on the calendar, see the estimate and send a booking request directly on the website, with no platform fee. Nothing is charged until the host confirms, usually within 24 hours.
